This satellite image provided by NASA shows the smoke from a wildfire burning in parts of three neighboring counties in eastern North Carolina on Saturday, June 7, 2008. Today, the smoke moved inland towards New Bern and Pamlico County.
Smoke from a large wildfire over northern mainland Hyde County is spreading southwest and west of the fire. Northeast and east winds are pushing the smoke into Kinston, New Bern, Washington, Greenville and Williamston.
A dense smoke advisory was in effect for the area including Greenville, Kinston and New Bern. Forecasters said visibility could be cut to less than a mile in some areas before the smoke lifted.
More than 39,000 acres have burned since lightning started the fire June 1 near the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
